Using Web-based email (Horde) - a quick step-by-step guide to checking your email via the web.
Control Panel - information about the main interface tool used for controlling your website/domain.
General PC tools:
Microsoft Security Essentials - MicroSoft's Security Essentials is a free anti-virus/anti-malware which I have started using rather than AVG. MSE does not require the endless 'new version' installs every year like AVG does, and it simply keeps everything updated via the regular MicroSoft Update stream.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - this link will take you to the main AVG homepage for the free version. Follow the links to obtain the free version of AVG's Anti-Virus. This is an excellent alternative to paying Symantec & other vendors for virus protection.
Firefox Browser - Firefox is simply the best browser to use for surfing the web. Replace Internet Explorer with this as your main browser to avoid many nasty problems. IE is very prone to 'browser hijacking' and can allow sites to infect your computer without your knowledge, even though you have anti-virus and firewalls active.
Thunderbird is a replacement mail client for Outlook Express. Thunderbird gives you a faster, safer, and more productive email experience. Thunderbird was designed to prevent viruses and to stop junk mail so you can get back to reading your mail.
The free Adobe Reader® software lets anyone view and print Adobe PDF files.
Java - You'll want to have the real java code from Sun Microsystems so that many websites will display and function correctly.
K9 - free Internet Filtering software by Blue Coat. Allows temporary or permanent overrides, reporting of all internet activity, time controls, etc. Very good alternative to expensive parental control software.
Trillian Basic is an excellent free alternative to AOL's Instant Messenger program. Trillian is a full featured, stand-alone, chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. It provides capabilities not possible with original network clients. Without stealing your home page and with no other included software, pop-ups, or spyware, Trillian provides unique functionality such as contact message history, tabbed messaging, global status changes (set all networks away at once), and much more.
iTunes - Apple's multimedia software (includes QuickTime for video)
Open Office - a free alternative to MS's Office suite.
WinPatrol - monitors startup programs & other changes to system internals.
DiskPie2 - easy way to find where all the space is being consumed on your disk (in pie chart format)
GoodSync - helpful for backing up to an external drive or other backup locations
Tools for removing spyware, malware, virus's, & other 'uglies':
SpyBot - 'Search & Destroy' - the best privacy software available
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - great tool for catching some of the stuff that SpyBot & others miss
Ad-Aware by LavaSoft - similar to SpyBot. Both tools seem to catch different things, so just because you have one doesn't mean you don't need the other.
TrojanHunter - Downloadable free trial version - can help cleanse your pc if you think you may be infected.
CCleaner - CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.
Cleanup - another tool similar to CCleaner. Find Cleanup under 'products' on Steven Gould's page.
HijackThis - examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. Can be used to create a text log of your system which can be used to identify 'uglies' which need to be removed.
SpyWareInfo - good website detailing many of the problems and fixes regarding 'browser hijacking', spyware, and various other 'uglies'
Website and email related:
Nvu - html editor for creating web pages (very FrontPage-like)
Irfanview - graphics utility for resizing photos, generating thumbnails, bulk rename/copy, slideshow, etc.
WS_FTP LE - ftp utility for transferring files between your pc and your website
JetMailMonitor - constantly monitor multiple email addresses to know when you have mail waiting
